To pop or not to pop!

If you can stop it at the hot spot then there will be no need to pop anything. However here is our guide on what to do about blister formation.

What to do:

1: HOT SPOTS

  • STOP:
    • Shoes and socks off
    • Clean foot and dry skin
    • Check for dirt, grit, rucked sock etc.
  • Apply treatment of choice:
    • More powder or
    • More lubricant
    • Tape the area (make sure you remember your skin preparation)
    • Hydrocolloid dressing such as Compeed, but be careful with placement as removal can cause further injury
    • Socks and shoes on carefully
    • Make sure laces are done correctly

2-3: BLISTERS WITH ROOF

  • STOP:
    • Shoes and socks off
    • Clean foot and dry skin
    • Check for dirt, grit, rucked sock etc.
  • If small blister, then treat as hot spot with tape
  • If large then the guidelines are bellow however we recommend you seek medical attention to perform this:
    • Clean area with alcohol wipe
    • Using a sterile sharp instrument (clean)
    • Put 2 small holes at the periphery of the blister (think about gravity and foot movement as to where you put the holes to assist with drainage)
    • Make sure holes are big enough so that they will not quickly close
    • DO NOT REMOVE THE BLISTER ROOF
    • Apply gentle pressure to blister to drain
    • Wipe with alcohol wipe use your skin preparation to assist adhesion of tape and let dry
  • Tape firmly and securely over the blister
  • Go BIG and think about direction of movement to avoid overlapping tape to ruck up

4: BLISTER WITHOUT ROOF

These should be dealt with by a medic. Emergency guidelines for reference only:
  • STOP:
    • Shoes and socks off
    • Clean foot with alcohol wipe or a couple of cc’s of water and pat dry.
    • Apply an antiseptic ointment or dressing if you have one
    • If you can gently pull skin back across the blister
    • If not possible then clip away gently (DO NOT RIP SKIN OFF)
    • Apply a non-adherent dressing or a bit of tissue paper to the blister
    • Tape firmly and securely over the blister
    • Socks and shoes on carefully
    • Get back on the track
    • Get checked by a medic as soon as possiblep
