Proprioception
The foot is an amazing sensory organ that feeds huge amounts of information from the
foot the the Central Nervous System (CNS) to the Brain (for more complicated
movement patterns) for processing and then back again.
There are three main elements of the body that send information to the CNS, they are joints,
skin and muscles/tendons. Collectively they are otherwise called Mechanoreceptors. When all three
are firing properly and able to send accurate and precise information about pressure, joint
orientation, rate of movement and range of movement about the joint the body works with greater synergy.
The founder of profeet,
researched propriocetion in detail and noted that the stability of the body is best with
barefoot, worst with the shoes and closer to normal with a custom moulded insole
(inserted into the shoe) using windlass biomechanics. The interesting
point to note is that shoes actually mask and inhibit the feedback of these
mechanoreceptors!
A profeet custom insole
actually wakens these receptors back up again. Our conclusion is that the most important aspect of any device added
to the foot should be primarily to facilitate the function of these receptors
and allow the body/foot to discover its optimum path of tracking while in
contact with the ground. Every foot is unique and every foot has an ideal
'signature' motion.
